If you’ve recently upgraded your Mac to Catalina or Mac OS 10.15.1, you may have noticed that Audacity is no longer working. To get it working, you’ll need to download version Audacity 2.3.3. However, installing and running it normally the way you’ve done it in the past will not be enough. Because of Catalina, Audacity is not able to gain permissions to the microphone inputs. The only way I was able to get it working is to launch Audacity from the Terminal.

Ocenaudio is a cross-platform, easy to use, fast and functional audio editor. In the Terminal dialog type the following command following command: open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity (this assume that Audacity is stored in your Applications folder. If it is somewhere else, you will need to change the path in the above command.) Confirm the request for microphone permissions when requested. At the time of this article, Audacity is not supported under 10.15 macOS Catalina. This includes Audacity recording playback from devices, such as Griffin’s iMic. However, there is a workaround to get recording playback working again in Audacity for macOS 10.15. Ensure Audacity is in your Applications folder and is quit.
